Sports News the week of January 11

BASKETBALL:  Tuesday night the Longhorn Womens basketball team took on the Angleton Wildcats. It was a clean sweep with both the JV and Varsity winning. The JV won 23 to 32 with Danielle Dunk scoring nine. The varsity won big 58 to 27 with Alexis White scoring 18 and Kendall Bess scoring 13. The next game will be on Friday against Terry at the Ranch. Come out and support the Longhorns!

SOCCER: The Boys JV soccer team traveled to Needville for a Varsity competition against the BlueJays. The team lost 4-3. Goals were scored by Emanuel Santos (2) & Christian Centeno. Assists were by Santos, Alec Garcia, and Evan Elkins.

Girls Varsity soccer team traveled to Wharton to take on the Lady Tigers. The girls went on a scoring frenzy winning 10-0. Goals were scored by Riley Murray, Jordan Shimitias, Shreya Desai, Tayler Jasek, Shana Hardin, Ariana Salazar, Kasey Davis, Clare Valdez, Michelle Mills, and Colleen Janecek.

The girls’ soccer team also traveled to Katy Taylor last night to play their opening game in the I -10 Shootout against the Vidor Lady Pirates. The girls walked away with a 2-0 victory on a foggy night. Goals came from Taylor Rech and Jordan Shimaitis. Outstanding defensive play from Meghan Burger, Madeline Bares, Shana Hardin and Clare Valdez. The girls will take on Katy Taylor today at 2pm! Go Longhorns!!

The Boys Varsity soccer team traveled to Wharton High School where they defeated the Tigers 5-2. Scoring for the Longhorns were Eric Michel, Julian Centeno, Mason Mercado, each with 1 goal, and 2 goals scored by Daniel Eke. Assists came from Julian Centeno.

SOFTBALL:  If you are planning to try out for softball for the 2016 season, stop by room 2006 or 1316 and speak to Coach Arlund or Coach Vrba. Tryouts are January 22 and 23.

SWIM:  GRHS Swim and dive finished their duel meet with a sweep of the LCISD SCHOOLS. Kate Hartman, Geminini Chancoco, Charlotte Johansen, Elizabeth Markee, Lauren Hardee, Hannah Moore Katie Voelkel and Gabriela Salazar all contributed to the Girls winning all 3 relays! Mark Kvinta, Aaron O’rielly, Kyle Krush, David Kvinta, Jacob Liang, Camp Priest, and Jacob Gamble contributed in winning 2 of the 3 boys relays. Kate Hartman, Geminini Chancoco, Charlotte Johansen, Gabriela Salaza, David Kvinta, Jacob Liang, Camp Priest, Jacob Gamble, Rachel Reed, and Dominic Daughtry, all won individual events. The district meet is January 28th and 30th where GRHS will go up against the LCISD schools and the Spring Branch ISD schools. In several events, last year’s district meet was the fastest 5A district meet in the state of Texas and is shaping up to be another very fast meet.

TRACK:  Attention to all girls and boys track parents, Wednesday January 20th at 6:00- 7:00 pm will be a Mandatory Parent meeting held in the GRHS auxiliary gymnasium. Please plan to be there as pertinent information will be given out in regards to the 2016 season. Look forward to seeing all of you there.

WRESTLING:  The Longhorn Wrestling program held it’s Senior night last night. The Seniors who were honored were Shekina Bonner-Spiller, Cienna Cantu, Shelbi Mangel, Jordan Martinez, Lydia Masters, Chantel Togarepi, Zyon Savery, Cuyler Hendricks and Myles West. The Longhorn Varsity Boys defeated Friendswood but fell to Katy Tompkins. The Girls Varsity went 2-0 defeating both of the visiting teams in sound fashion. The match of the night was by Sophomore Nathan Hernandez in his first varsity match defeating Katy Tompkins 6-5 in a gutsy performance. The entire Longhorn program will be competing in it’s 4th annual Longhorn Invitational here at the Ranch on Saturday. Wrestling starts at 8:30 am and will run all day. Come out and support your Longhorns as they defend the Ranch from some of the best 5A programs in Southeast Texas.
