Wrangler Spotlight: Color Guard
Welcome to The Wrangler Spotlight, a series where we interview members of different clubs at the Ranch. The goal of this series is to explore all the different extracurriculars that are offered to students!
In this second edition of the Wrangler Spotlight, we’ll be focusing on the Color Guard!
Google says Color Guard involves a performance group, usually associated with a marching band or drum corps, that uses flags, sabers, rifles, dance, and other props to provide visual storytelling and interpret music.
I interviewed senior Sophia Hernandez, the captain of the Color Guard team. Let’s see what she has to say about it!
What, in your own words, is Color Guard
“Color Guard is a combination of dance, cheer, and gymnastics including flag, rifle, and saber.”
What is your favorite thing about Color Guard? What have you gained?
My favorite part is performing. I’ve gained a lot of confidence through Color Guard.”
What is the most challenging part of Color Guard?
“The pressure that’s on you to be perfect. Especially if you get a solo!”
What do you wish more people knew about Color Guard?
“How hard it is and how much practice it takes.”
The Color Guard performs at the halftime show at GRHS football games alongside the band. Their 2025-2026 marching show is titled “Please Stand By”. The band and guard also perform this 3-part marching show for competitions through UIL. Their marching season lasts to November. After that, the Color Guard enters their Winter guard season, where they perform indoors in competitions through TCGC (Texas Color Guard Circuit) and WGI (Winter guard International). For the past 2 years in a row the Varsity Winter guard team has made it all the way to state! Can they do it again this year? We hope so!
Catch the band and color guard at any GRHS football game! You can check out the football schedule:
If you’d like to join Color Guard or are interested, come to their Winter Guard auditions in November or speak to a band director!
