ACLU In Response to Alabama: “We Will Sue”

Alabama has officially passed a bill that takes away women’s right to choose. Abortions in Alabama will soon be completely illegal except in cases when the mother’s life is threatened.

Alabama’s legislature officially passed a new law into effect that makes abortion almost completely illegal. This law is a gross display of how little women’s bodies and lives are valued in American society today. This bill will go into effect in about 6 months, unless it is declared unconstitutional, which it very much is. They are attempting to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade.

Abortion is a constitutional right and the ACLU have announced, “We will sue to stop this law from ever taking effect.”

Alabama legislatures voted 25-6 to pass the law. According to CNN, “The bill would punish doctors who perform abortions with up to 99 years in prison and does not allow exceptions for cases of rape and incest — making it the most restrictive abortion bill in the country.”

The amendment to add rape and incest exceptions failed 11-22, once again proving that the people in power do not care about women.

We will sue to stop this law from ever taking effect.

You can also not travel to another state to get an abortion, if you do so you can face serious jail time and fines. If an 11-year-old girl is raped and doesn’t tell her parents, because she’s not really sure what happened, she will be forced to carry the baby to full term, unless she has a life-threatening pregnancy.

Imagine living in a country where the government, whether on a state or local level, passes bills that won’t allow raped women and children to get an abortion. This is, unfortunately, a reality for every woman in America and in the state of Alabama.
