Howdy Longhorns! Welcome back to the Spring Longhorns Sports Report. This week we wrapup regular season play on GRHS Soccer and dive right into some big-time matchups in Baseball and Softball. Well start with Baseball.

Coach Kobza’s Varsity squad sit at 2-3 in district play following some tough losses to FB Austin, Ridge Point, and FB Travis. The Longhorns lost on a controversial call when Cody Ford was called out on strikes by the base umpire to end the game against the Bulldogs. That game finished 5-4 in favor of FB Austin. The first rivalry game of the season against Ridge Point was going well until the 6th inning when Ridge Point plated 6 runs to put the game out of reach. The Longhorns lost, 8-1. The skid continued against FB Travis where the Tigers plated 5 in the 2nd inning. That would be all that happened that game as the Tigers blanked the Longhorns 5-0.  Things needed to change against FB Bush, and thankfully they did.  Thanks to clutch hitting from (JR) Brandon Mays and (SR) Grant Reynolds the Longhorns pulled off the come back against the Broncos. The game finished 6-4. The Longhorns host the newest team to District 20-6A–the FB Hightower Hurricanes–on Friday, March 24th, and travel to face FB Dulles on Tuesday, March 28th.

Coach Witt’s Varsity side didn’t play over spring break due to their scheduled opponents FB Dulles having to forfeit their matchup on Tuesday.  The Ladies returned to action the following Tuesday where they thrashed FB Elkins 10-0 in 5 innings. The Lady Longhorns sit at 6-2 in District 20-6A play placing them in 3rd place exactly halfway through their season. They host the FB Clements Lady Rangers on Friday, March 24th, and travel to face FB Austin on Tuesday, March 28th.

Coach Matt Jackson’s Varsity Squad finished their best season in school history with a 3-1 win over FB Elkins.  G-R got goals from Seniors Johnathan Kayizi and Rogelio Tristan to cap off the big night for the Longhorns. The Longhorns advance to the 20-6A UIL Bi-District Playoffs and host the first playoff game in school history with a 7 pm start against the Katy Paetow Panthers Friday.  Good luck to them as they look to move on in the postseason.

Lady Longhorns Soccer finished up their 2023 district season with a 2-0 loss to FB Elkins. They finish their season 12-7-4 overall and 9-4-3 in 20-6A play with a playoff berth on the way. Coach Jimenez’s team plays Seven Lakes High School (20-0-2) in the first round of the 20-6A UIL Playoffs on Thursday, March 23rd.

Well,  that’s a wrap on an action packed Longhorn Sports Report. Well be back next week to report the playoffs scores from soccer and more Baseball and Softball right here on the Longhorns Sports Report.
